W&M Business Outreach Program: Maximizing Your Profits through Quality Management and Process Improvement

Date: Thursday, May 15

Time: 8:30 AM-12:30 PM

QM102: Essential Quality Tools: "Organizing the Tool Box" Prof. Guerrero

Quality tools can be both simple and complicated. Most of these have come to rest in the tool-box of Six-Sigma quality management. It is important that you begin the study of world class quality by understanding what tools are available and how they are used. In some cases this isn't easy, but in others it is surprisingly simple. So we will focus our efforts on understanding what's in the tool-box by addressing the following question:

  • What are the major quality tools?
  • Does the size of the tool-box matter?
  • When and how do I apply them?
  • Does it make sense to concentrate on some and not others?
  • Why does the thought of Statistics make my head hurt?

Location: Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance office at 421 North Boundary Street.

Cost: $85.

Information/Registration: Call 229-6511 or visit the Alliance website, www.williamsburgcc.com.

Sensor Science & Technology Forum: Tired Iron – Monitoring Structural Health

Date: Thursday, May 22

Time: 8:30 AM- 12:00 PM

Description: Bridges collapse. Wings come off of airplanes. Ships break in two. All examples of “Tired Iron.”

Can such disasters be prevented? Is there available technology to enable the monitoring of existing equipment that could help prevent such disasters? And, what about new equipment – can new or existing technologies determine aircraft corrosion and structural fatigue? Ship stresses ad possible structural failures? How does NASA approach these issues for space missions? And what kind of sensors and sensor systems are needed for solutions to these vexing problems?

To find out, the May 22 Forum will fill in the gaps. We will have speakers from NASA, Northrop-Grumman, Luna Innovations, and the College of William & Mary who will discuss advances in these critical areas. And we will get an update from the NIA about their current activities plus a 5-minue presentation from a very interesting local company.
