James City County Hosts Small Business Appreciation Event

The James City County Board of Supervisors, Economic Development Authority, and Office of Economic Development hosted the County's fifth annual Small Business Recognition Event recently at The Music Theatre of Williamsburg. More than 60 guests attended. The companies being hosted were small industrial, technical, and business service companies located in James City County which employ fewer than 10 people and are located at a commercial facility.

In welcoming remarks, Sandy Wanner, James City County Administrator, noted that this event is one of an on-going series of efforts to recognize the contribution businesses of all types and sizes make to the community. Small businesses, because of their large numbers, local orientation, and entrepreneurial tendencies, are an important part of the local business mix.

Glen Duff, Vice President of Design Master Associates, Inc., was the featured speaker. Duff helped start the company in James City County that designs unique items for the gift shops of historic museums and visitor attractions. Over fifteen years, the company has grown from a part-time, home occupation to a 35-person team in a 40,000-square foot facility in Stonehouse Commerce Park. Its products are featured in the gift shops of dozens of nationally known museums, including the White House Society, which has chosen its design for a Christmas ornament three years in a row.

Jack Barnett, owner of The Music Theatre, added his support to the event by inviting those attending to be his guests afterwards for a performance of the spring show entitled "Bandstand Boogie."
