Wal-Mart is underway with construction of the first one million square-feet of a two-million square foot, $50 million import distribution facility off Route 60 in the GreenMount Industrial Park. Representatives of the County, State and Peninsula economic development organizations joined Wal-Mart executives for a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, May 4, 2000. Virginia's Secretary of Commerce and Trade Barry DuVal, along with Virginia Secretary of Transportation Shirley Ybarra, helped welcome Wal-Mart to James City County. The new import distribution center will sit on 166 acres in GreenMount Industrial Park and will employ approximately 400 people within 30 months of opening. Governor Jim Gilmore designated $700,000 from the Governor's Economic Opportunity Fund for the project. The money is expected to be used for Wal-Mart's site preparation and facility. |
