This year's Captain John Smith Award, presented by the County for outstanding business achievement, went to Printpack, Inc., a manufacturer of high barrier plastic containers for the food industry. In accepting the award, Printpack's Director of Marketing, Sales, and Technical Services Jamie Clark remarked, "James City County has been very supportive of Printpack's development and growth, and we are pleased to have a plant here." The company was established in James City County in 1984 and is a division of Printpack Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia. Its 12,000-square foot expansion in 1998 involved an additional capital investment of $7.5 million. It supplies such customers as Mott, Hershey, and Kellogg, among others, with containers that are custom-engineered to protect and preserve specific foods. One hundred forty people are currently employed at this facility in self-directed work teams that design, manufacture, and ship product 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In presenting the award, Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Nervitt noted that James City County is fortunate to have a number of excellent companies like Printpack. These companies contribute to and are compatible with the uniqueness and special qualities of the community. In further remarks, EDA Chairman Gilbert Bartlett noted that this past year has been a banner year for James City County in terms of existing business expansions, plant openings, and new company announcements. Mentioning Anheuser-Busch's continuing modernization of its plant, ARI's expansion and relocation, John Deere's upcoming plant start-up, DJG's new building, Thomas Nelson Community College's new satellite campus, and Wal-Mart's start of construction on its import distribution facility, he pledged the EDA's support of James City County's economic development efforts. The event was held in conjunction with the statewide Business Appreciation Week declared by Governor Jim Gilmore for May 14-20. Delegate George Grayson presented a proclamation commending the James City County Board and EDA for efforts to support and attract business. |
