James City County company, AVID Medical, Inc., a leading provider of Custom Procedure Trays for the Healthcare Industry, was recently awarded the Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s 2005 Virginia Vanguard Award for Manufacturing. AVID assembles medical components and devices in a specific “custom” sequence to be utilized by healthcare personnel in surgery, labor and delivery, radiology and the emergency room. Area customers include Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond, as well as numerous other hospital systems in the mid-west.
Initially opened in 2000, AVID has doubled the footprint of its original 40,000-square foot, facility in Stonehouse Commerce Park, in addition to more than doubling its workforce in the same five year period. It is again in the process of expanding at its present site, representing an additional $7.5 million investment, and an additional 150 employees.
The Virginia Vanguard Awards showcase the top companies in the state with the highest growth rates in the categories of technology, retail/wholesale, manufacturing, service and highest growth rate overall. In addition, AVID has been awarded the Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s Fantastic Fifty Award for the third year in a row. The Fantastic Fifty Awards program recognizes small, entrepreneurial companies throughout the Commonwealth for the contribution they are making to the economy by creating new jobs and capital investment.
